We begin the Hohenzollern Family story from their earliest impression – rooted in name. The Hohenzollern family originated from Swabia, in the Baden-Wurttemberg region. The first address the family settled on was called the Zollern, and from 1218 it was called the Hohenzollern. The capital of this Holy Roman Empire site was the village of Hechingen – a small village located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Stuttgart. The noble family itself is based in Castle Hohenzollern – a monumental medieval castle on the 855 m (2805 ft) high Mount Hohenzollern in the Baden-Wurttemberg region.
