Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they or its inflected or derivative forms, them, their, theirs, and themselves (or themself), as an epicene (gender-neutral) singular pronoun. The singular they emerged by the 14th century, about a century after plural they. It has been commonly employed in everyday English ever since then. I cannot believe they let people who don’t understand singular “they” teach…let alone high school. No wonder our educational system is so screwed. Some of the brightest people I know struggle with information processing. If we reduce intelligence to ‘grammar’ then we are missing out on so much. Christmas Let It Snow Sweater. Snyder thats the feeling a got. If I am referring to a singular individual and I use they I feel like I am sounding stupid and crazy. Hoeye however you do not address someone to their face as “They”. Yes singular they has been around a long time, but usually when indirectly referencing someone. To directly reference someone e.g by saying “Hello They” – is a very new concept ! Marvin Arbiton you are correct, we don’t say ‘ hello they’ nor do we say hello she/he/her/him. We do however say things like ‘ have you met my friend Shannon? They are an architect’ while standing directly in front of them. Im failing to see your train of thought. By the way. You’re a bigot and shouldn’t be teaching. Not just because you are ignorant, but also because you seem to think “they” can’t be singular. They is a perfectly acceptable singular pronoun. “They have left their coat” clearly refers to a single individual leaving a coat! Kinda sad you can’t understand basic English grammar.
