Having said that Viola’s character in the film was not intended as someone who the viewer should laugh at, her role was serious, portraying an individual in a era in which segregation, inequality and racism did occur! She informed many who watched it what the harsh reality of the 60’s was like, whilst reinforcing and reminding those that wished to forget what occurred too!

She shouldn’t feel guilty! Yes she may have played what may be deemed a stereotype but the film isn’t a comedy…I think in this instance intention is key, I’d understand her guilt if the film was a spoof or a comedy but I’d like to think the film created more positivity in the 21st century by highlighting the harsh reality of the 20th century! Will only remove for craft beer cloth face mask. I don’t believe she understands how much that movie did to bring the reality of what being Black in the South meant during the ’60’s. I’m not understanding where her guilt comes from. She did a wonderful job of portraying her character, showing a multifaceted character with the emotional strength of Atlas. This movie may be the single most important movie for a generation of young White people who had no clue what Black people have had to endure. The reality, likeable or not, is that without the help of a White person in the ’60’s Black people wouldn’t have had their stories told. A Black writer for a larger newspaper in the South didn’t exist. Yes, the movie played to White audiences and that was the goal – enlightenment of Whites. Black people already knew the realities. She’s taken a strange position on a film that gave her the “pop” she wanted.
