I had surgery in early April, which involved just an overnight stay in hospital. I felt a bit sore afterwards for a week or so, but that was all. I do not need to have either radiotherapy or chemotherapy; all I am having is hormone therapy (Breast cancer test means most avoid chemo) to reduce the production of oestrogen. This is an approach which our local hospital has been following successfully for some time now, but which is, as of 10 days ago, national policy for most women with early stage cancers like this one.
So by early May I was feeling fine, and have no reason to expect to feel otherwise. People I meet keep saying to me, “But you look so well!”, and truly, that is because I am. The hospital will monitor me fairly closely just in case I should get a recurrence, but if it happens, well, I know it’s not something to worry about.
Please, if you even suspect you might have something going wrong, don’t hang about: the sooner they diagnose it, the greater the chance that it can be successfully treated, and the lower your chances of its being lethal.
